Answering Without Rediscovering the Operation

What a bounded retrieval test demonstrated—and what it did not.

The cost before the answer

A routine field question could start a surprisingly long process: search Drive, find a likely source, interpret its contents, resolve the date and then answer. Even when the final answer was useful, I had paid the cost of introducing the operation again.

Quick Query changed the path for a bounded set of questions. The first stop became structured state with source locators, dates and limitations already attached. When the question required stronger verification, the client could follow the locator to the controlling source. Audit work still required a broader review.

The September test

The September 25 Work Return records a fresh-context test of twenty fixed questions without broad Drive search. Twelve produced hits, seven produced appropriately qualified answers and one correctly exposed missing Current information where only a scenario value existed. That is a successful test of answer behavior, including refusal to manufacture a current fact.

The test used twenty primary SQL calls, one follow-up SQL call and four direct source reads. No confirmed wrong-source event was recorded. A source-interpretation error in evaluation was corrected from the owning headers; the result should not be described as a system that never makes mistakes.

Retrieval is only part of latency

The recorded mean for the twenty primary SQL tool calls was about 4.08 seconds. This was tool retrieval time, not the time from speaking a question to hearing a complete answer. Connector overhead was much larger than the representative database execution time.

There was no comparable timed baseline, so the test does not establish a percentage speedup. It also did not establish mobile acceptance, universal access from every conversation or automatic freshness. Refresh remained manual and bounded in that implementation return. A mode named Verified still depended on the client actually reading the source.

What the operating layer earns

The useful change was removing broad discovery from those tested questions. A fresh session could begin with a defined representation of the operation and expose what it did not know.

That is a narrower claim than eliminating cold starts everywhere, but it is a meaningful one. The next challenge is maintaining the source contracts, refreshing the right values and preserving that behavior when the question arrives by voice from the field.
